Help grow winegrapes of exceptional quality on approximately 17 hectares of estate vineyards & provide a seamless interface between vineyard and winery in order to produce singular wines of the highest calibre and distinction. This position, which reports to the General Manager: Estate, will coordinate and monitor vineyard activities and help ensure timely and accurate cultural practices. EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in an agricultural field or equivalent experience.
Familiarity with wines is desirable. SKILLS / COMPETENCIES: Excellent communication, influence, and negotiation skills are required in order to work effectively with a variety of people.
Strong mathematical skills and detail orientation are required in order to calculate expenses, material needs and yield, analyze deviations, and develop recommendations for corrective action.
Strong reasoning skills, judgment and problem-solving skills are required in order to coordinate multiple activities; analyze and resolve problems. Demonstrated ability to effectively foster teamwork and motivate excellent performance is required. Specific areas of Responsibility include, but are not limited to: VINEYARD MANAGEMENT: Coordinate with vineyard manager, winemaker and owners throughout the year to schedule all work for estate vineyard: pruning, planting, grafting, spraying, hedging, leafing, thinning, cover crop management, nutrient balance of vines, etc. Work with, direct and oversee vineyard crew operations, Work with and coordinate the efforts of consultants, Monitor water usage and needs throughout the season through, ressure bombs, soil probes, etc. Manage and monitor water quality of reservoirs, Calibrate tractors and spray equipment, Schedule appropriate sampling for vine nutrient status, Provide crop estimates. ADMINISTRATION: In consultation with GM: Estate - Order and manage inventory of all vineyard equipment, materials and supplies, Oversee and maintain all equipment pertaining to the vineyard, Maintain all records as related to vineyard operations, practices and required reporting
Educate vineyard crew on proper practices and safety, Coordinate annual safety meetings for the vineyard crew, Compile reports as determined by GM: Estate, Stay up to date on continuing research and technology related to viticulture, Attend educational seminars and meetings, share findings with owner and winemaker and implement findings when possible, Maintain database of all vineyard operations, maintain budgets and report expenditures and labor hours in a timely manner to General Manager and Accounting. WINEMAKING: Work throughout the year to assure coordination of vineyard operations with winery goals, Participate in internal tastings throughout the year, Assist the winemaking team as needed, Assist organization of, and attend winery functions as needed, Performs special projects as assigned.
