GIS Specialist

Based at Addlestone, Surrey

This is an exciting opportunity to use your GIS knowledge to solve real problems in the areas of animal health and food safety. The VLA leads research and surveillance projects on a wide range of animal and veterinary public health issues of current national and international importance. Working in research teams within the Centre of Epidemiology and Risk Analysis at VLA, you will use GIS applications to increase understanding of animal and public health issues and provide scientific advice to help inform Government policy.  With considerable opportunity to shape your role, you will communicate results to increase awareness of GIS techniques and develop novel methods through academic collaboration.

You should have a degree or post-graduate qualification with a significant GIS component, or a veterinary degree with GIS experience. Programming skills are essential (e.g. .Net or VB) and experience of administering GIS software (such as ArcGIS, ArcIMS, SDE) and scripting (such as PHP) would be an advantage.

This is a full-time, (may be suitable for two part-time staff if continuity could be arranged) permanent post in Pay Band D £23,150 - £32,100 per annum.  The Civil Service offers a choice of either an Occupational Pension Scheme or Stakeholder Pension scheme, giving you the flexibility to choose the pension that suits you best.   Other benefits include 30 days annual leave, an on-site nursery, flexible working and annual pay reviews.
